World's Greatest Spring Break in Waterloo

WATERLOO (KWWL) -– Favorite spring break destinations include South Padre, Cancun, and Daytona, but this year, several local organizations are teaming up to offer what they consider the World's Greatest Spring Break for Kids, in downtown Waterloo.

From March 12-20, "Spring-breakers" will have an opportunity for interactive fun related to art, culture, history, science and sports at several downtown Waterloo attractions - all within a six-block radius! Sponsored by the R.J. McElroy Trust, the World's Greatest Spring Break for Kids will give visitors nine days of $1 admission at six downtown Waterloo attractions: The Phelps Youth Pavilion, Bluedorn Science Imaginarium, Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum and Grout Museum of History and Science, National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum, Black Hawk Children's Theater and Young Arena.

Last year, the R.J. McElroy Trust celebrated the 100th birthday of R.J. McElroy by sponsoring $1 admission to the Phelps Youth Pavilion, Bluedorn Science Imaginarium, Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veterans Museum and Grout Museum of History and Science during a weeklong celebration. More than 10,100 kids and families participated in 7 days last year. That was an average of 1,447 people per day, and 195 people per hour.

This year, the trust will use the same idea to give families a low cost option for spring break entertainment.

"Projects like this pay tribute to McElroy and also fulfill his last wish – to benefit deserving young people. All of these downtown attractions symbolize historical and creative ways to engage youth, and truly enhance the renaissance of downtown Waterloo," Stacy Van Gorp, Executive Director of the R.J. McElroy Trust said in a written statement. "We are very fortunate to have these caliber of attractions in our community, and providing kids with low-cost access to these amazing venues is a great way to honor McElroy's business and philanthropic contributions."
