Iowa education agency to lay off 50 workers

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- Fifty employees of Grant Wood Area Education Agency have been told they'll be laid off in June.

Grant Wood spokesman George Held said that the layoffs are mostly a result of anticipated cuts in state funding. Iowa has yet to approve a state budget, but the governor has proposed a $20 million cut for area education agencies.

The layoffs won't be official until the state passes its budget, but Cedar Rapids-based Grant Wood were required by job contracts to announce the losses.

The workers will stay on the job until the end of the fiscal year in June.
