Stroke drug may prevent disabilities

WATERLOO (KWWL)-- The clot busting drug TPA may benefit patients with mild stroke in addition to severe cases.

Patients with mild stroke aren't typically given TPA due to the risk of brain bleeds.

But researchers at the University of Cincinnati tested the drugs on over 400 patients and found, in most cases, the benefits outweighed any risks.

They estimate 43,000 with mild stroke would be eligible for TPA each year -- and the drug could prevent more than 2,000 of them from becoming disabled.
