Love Stories: Singles speed dating for a cure

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Let's face it.  This time of year, being single isn't easy.  But a group of singles in the Cedar Valley are using their status for a good cause.

"I go around the town and just kinda feel like you see the same face," Amy O'Brien said of the local dating scene.

But the eligible bachelors and bachlorettes we spoke with say single life has its up sides.

"You really gotta worry about you. That sounds a little selfish, maybe it is," Josh Pankey said.

On this night, eleven men and eleven women are trying out Blazing Dates Speed Dating.

"My friend Emerald and I were out one night and she had said how she was single and looking for people and you just don't know in the bar if they're single people," founder Tracey Southall said.

Southall set up this event to help singles in the Cedar Valley.

"Valentine's Day is traditionally not the day you want to be alone," Southall said.

So, for five minutes, each one of the men and women will get to know each other. They were all hoping to find someone they like at the end of the night.

"I was a bit apprehensive but it hasn't been too bad it hasn't been too painful. I'm actually enjoying myself," Pankey said.

Founder Tracey Southall is part of the single crowd at this event, but tonight she's looking for more than love. She is a 10-year cancer survivor who had stage 3 lymphoma. The Blazing Dates service was set up to raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

And while singles travel from table to table, Southall hopes to find a cure for cancer and a cure for the heart.

"Give you the hope that maybe you'll find someone during this event. I just want to help everybody find that someone," Southall said.

You can find out more information about Blazing Dates on their website. Southall plans to hold another event in the spring.
