Attorney General's office cracks down on soliciting

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- The Iowa Attorney General's Office says a California company that charges $87 to provide deeds is violating the Iowa Consumer Fraud Act.

The company is called State Record Retrieval Board. The state is asking it to stop soliciting Iowans.  Owners of Iowa property can get deeds at county recorder offices for $5 or less.  The Attorney General's Office says the company is misleading people when it suggests homeowners need to buy a deed and by making their solicitation letter look like a government document.

Company leaders say it's not misleading potential customers and that its letter clearly says the company is not a government agency.
