CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Dumont man will serve five years of federal probation after being convicted of selling a machine gun to an undercover officer.

Paul Hilsman, 51, received the sentence on Wednesday after pleading guilty on September 28, 2010 to one charge of possessing an unregistered machine gun.

On May 7, 2010, during an undercover operation, Hilsman, who was a marijuana and methamphetamine user, sold an agent a machine gun for $400 cash.

The machine gun, an AK-47 style rifle, was not registered to Hilsman as required by law.

As part of his probation, Hilsman will serve 180 days of home confinement and five consecutive weekends in custody.
