CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- An arrest on New year's Eve 2009 has lead to a conviction on federal gun charges for a Waterloo man.

Asa Winters, 21, was arrested at a Waterloo liquor store at around 9:00 p.m. on December 31, 2009 after police found a 9 mm handgun with an obliterated serial number in his pocket.

Winters had previously been convicted of being a marijuana user and under federal law, a drug user is prohibited from possessing a gun.

Winters pleaded guilty on Tuesday to one count of being an illegal drug user in possession of a firearm.

Sentencing will be set for a later date, but Winters faces up to 10 years in prison without the possibility of parole, a fine of up to $250,000 and up to 3 years of supervised release.
