Federal investigators search Traer care center

TRAER (KWWL) -- Investigators with FBI and US Postal Inspection Service are investigating fraud involving a popular postage website.  And an eastern Iowa business has become part of the investigation.

The Tama County Sheriff's Office says it is not part of the investigation.  But the department was given a heads-up that federal authorities would be looking into the Sunrise Hill Care and Rehab Center in Traer.  And officials with the nursing home were caught off guard when those investigators arrived there Wednesday morning.

It's business as usual now at the Sunrise Hill Care and Rehab Center in Traer.  But Wednesday morning, investigators with the FBI and US Postal Inspection Service arrived at the center.

The care center's administrator didn't want to go on camera with KWWL, but says that authorities alerted her that the facility came up during an investigation into the website Stamps.com.  Sunrise Hill has an account with the website for purchasing stamps for its bulk mailing and shipping needs.  Investigators told the administrator that Sunrise Hill's account had been used fraudulently.  So computers and records at the care center were searched Wednesday.

Because the investigation into the alleged fraud is ongoing, the US Postal Inspection Service declined to comment on the extent of the case and how many other parties might be involved.

Sunrise Hill's administrator told KWWL she believes the center has been cleared of any wrong doing.  But again, authorities can't verify that since the investigation is ongoing.

We also reached out to stamps.com.  Because of the US Postal Inspection Service's investigation, the company also cannot make any public comment about the case.
