Two teens arrested in Waterloo library explosion


WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Waterloo police have arrested two teens in connection with the explosion at the Waterloo Library.

On Jan. 22, Waterloo Police and Waterloo Fire Rescue responded to the Waterloo Public Library after reports of an explosion. The library was evacuated and Officers found that a chemical bomb had exploded causing damage to the floor.

Police have arrested 16-year-old Marqwane Shakeen Christopher Smith of Waterloo and 13-year-old Nekema Ziquavise Carter of Waterloo. They have both been charged with Arson in the First Degree.

According to police, the teens admitted to making the explosive device and taking it to the Library where it was placed by some bookshelves and set off.

Smith is being held in the Black Hawk County Jail. Carter was released to juvenile authorities.

No one was injured in the explosion.
