UPDATE: Name released in Dubuque Community School death

Posted: Updated:

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- A Dubuque school employee was killed outside the District's Forum Building early Tuesday morning after being run over by a school vehicle.

Lawrence Steven Brehm, Jr., 33, was killed after being hit by a vehicle driven by another employee, 48-year-old Dale Metcalf. The accident happened shortly after 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday outside the school district's main building called the Forum.

The Dubuque Police Department said no charges have been filed. The investigation will likely take several weeks to complete.

Dubuque Community School District superintendent Dr. Larie Godinez said Brehm was a member of the district's Buildings and Grounds Department. He had been with the department since 2005.

"This is a tragedy, certainly, for the family, certainly for the school district, but certainly for that department. They work very closely together and care very deeply for each other. Everybody is concerned about the family and the children," Godinez said.

Godinez also said the department crew was routinely preparing for the day when the accident happened. The vehicle that killed the employee had a snowplow attachment.

She said the department is now down to 19 members.

"It's a very close-knit group of fine men, who have worked together for a long time," Godinez said.

Dubuque Police are investigating the incident. The school district has also notified the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) about the accident.

One district employee of more than 30 years said she can't remember a fatal accident like this ever happening to a district employee on district grounds.

The District is offering support and counseling to the victim's family members and co-workers. Brehm was married and has three young children.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Hoffmann, Schneider & Kitchen Funeral Home in Dubuque.
