Legendary girls coach Gene Klinge up for major honor

SPRINGFIELD, MASS(KWWL)--The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame has announced the 2011 winners of the Morgan Wootten Award for Lifetime Achievement in Coaching High School Basketball.

The 2011 winner of the Morgan Wootten Award for girls' basketball is Gene Klinge of Iowa.

Coach Klinge has been on the sidelines coaching for nearly 50 years including the transition from six-person basketball to five-person basketball in the state of Iowa. His career began in 1962, at West Central of Maynard where he coached for 41 years, winning 817 games before leaving the school in 2003.

Klinge currently coaches at Waukon High School. In his first year at Waukon, he led the team to a 28-0 record and the state championship. Coach Klinge has won 968 total games and is currently the all-time wins leader in the girls basketball crazy state of Iowa.
