Holding off on hormone therapy may lessen risk of cancer

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Women who hold off on hormone therapy after menopause may be less likely to develop breast cancer, than if they start it earlier.

A large study of more than a million women in the U. K. shows starting hormone therapy around the time of menopause increased the risk of breast cancer.

That risk was significantly reduced when women waited at least 5 years after menopause.

This was true regardless of the type of hormone therapy used, or how long they ended up using it.

The findings echo a similar large study done in the U.S.
