Mayor of Iowa town dies

GUTTENBERG (KWWL) -- Guttenberg's mayor has passed away at age 79.

Gerald "Red" Block died Saturday at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque.

Block's term as Guttenberg's mayor was set to expire in 2013.

Block missed two meetings in January according to the minutes from Guttenberg City Council meetings.

The city's website says Councilman Ralph Livingston has been named mayor pro tem.

Block had been a Clayton County sheriff and Guttenberg police chief.

He's survived by his wife, Jerri, and three stepchildren.

Block's funeral will be Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Guttenberg.

He will be buried at Mt. Olivet.
