Lawmakers look at banning traffic cameras in Iowa

Posted:

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- A group of Iowa lawmakers wants to ban traffic cameras that monitor highways and streets for speeders and red-light violators.

Sen. Steve Kettering, of Lake View, is one of 12 Republican senators co-sponsoring the bill. He said the cameras "smack of Big Brother."

Sen. Brad Zaun, of Urbandale, will lead a Senate subcommittee that will study the proposal. He said the cameras have become a "cash cow" for cities.

However, Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal, a Council Bluffs Democrat, believes the cameras have saved lives.
