Iowa conservancy approved for federal funding

COON RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A central Iowa conservancy has received nearly $500,000 in federal grants.

Whiterock Conservancy will receive the money to help develop a system of trails through the 4,300 acres that are managed by the non-profit group.  The grant is part of the Federal Recreational Trails Program and funded through the Federal Highway Bill.

The funding still needs to be approved by Congress but the conservancy's executive director says he expects funding will be available by late this year. If funding is approved, construction on the trails will begin in 2012.
