Making a Difference: Gene Theis

Posted:

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)-- Gene Theis has lived in the Cedar Valley for more than thirty years. That makes him one of the most qualified volunteers at the Cedar Falls Visitors Center.

"A lot of them come into town wondering what to do in town or around the state."

Theis volunteers a few Saturdays a month at the center, but he doesn't stop there.

"I think whatever comes up and if I am available I just sign up for it and go for it."

Theis credits his mom for sparking the volunteer in him.

"She has always said there is always someone less fortunate than you are and if you can help you should always help. She gets really irritated with people up there sitting in the bars and don't do anything because she always asks them why don't you do help somebody."

Now Theis is influencing the next generation of volunteers. He said he brings his grandchildren to events and explains the importance of helping the community.

"Most people are not grumpy when volunteering because they don't have to be there they want to be there. The circle of friends you get to meet is great and its a lot of fun too."

Gene Theis has even won a few awards for his volunteering. He has won the Mayors' Volunteer Award and the Governor's Volunteer Award.
