UI proposes new children's hospital

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The Iowa Board of Regents will consider plans to build a new children's hospital at the University of Iowa.

UI Hospitals and Clinics officials are expected to ask the board to approve the $271 million 11-story building.  It would be paid for through hospital revenues, some borrowing and a $50 million fundraising campaign.

School officials say the hospital would consolidate medical treatment for children, which is currently scattered throughout several buildings on the hospital campus.  They say the building would improve care for children and their experience at the hospital because it will be more kid- and family-friendly. Amenities will include larger patient rooms, play areas and a children's theatre.

If approved, construction would begin sometime next year and be completed in 2014.
