Study: Red light cameras save lives

WASHINGTON, D.C. (KWWL) -- A new study shows red light cameras save lives.

The new data reveals that 159 lives in 14 cities over a five year period were saved.

The cameras take pictures of drivers who run stop lights.

A ticket is sent to the driver by mail after police analyze the photos. But the cameras have come under fire from several opponents in recent years. Some cities have done away with them altogether.

Critics also say the cameras are not designed to make traffic safer, but to raise money for local coffers.
