Farmer coalition aims to improve image

DES MOINES (AP) -- Two dozen of the nation's largest and best-funded farm groups have formed a coalition to counter poor publicity they say had led to bad public policy and threatened farmer's ability to produce food.

The U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance includes groups such as the National Corn Growers Association and National Pork Producers Council.  Their members are worried about the impact videos showing the mistreatment of livestock are having on consumers' attitudes and about the effect of groups opposed to biotech crops.

Social networking media such as Twitter and Facebook are likely to be part of the alliance's efforts, but officials with the Humane Society of the United States say using social media to defend practices most people find indefensible may be a bad strategy.
