Democrats see aviation bill as job creator

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Democrats say they will bring an aviation bill that includes $8 billion for airport construction to the Senate floor this week, pitching it as a jobs measure.

On Monday, Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., and other Democratic leaders will released an estimate by the American Association of Airport Executives that the airport construction funds will support the employment of 90,000 workers and affect another 190,000 jobs.

A statement provided to The Associated Press by Democratic leaders said the estimate is based on an assumption that $1 billion in federal construction spending supports 35,000 jobs.  That calculation is in line with previous Transportation Department estimates of the jobs impact of federal highway spending, but it also presumes a 25 percent match in spending by state governments.
