Branstad to begin interviewing justice candidates

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Gov. Terry Branstad says he will begin interviewing the nine candidates for the Iowa Supreme Court next week, but won't be asking them for their positions on specific cases.

On Monday, the governor said he will explore their temperament, judgment and judicial experience.

Two of the candidates are from eastern Iowa. Michael Mullins is from Washington and Bruce Zager is from Waterloo. Each of the nine candidates selected by the state's Judicial Nominating Commission will be given a one-hour interview.

Three of the candidates will be chosen to fill vacancies created on the court when voters ousted three justices for their role in a decision striking down a state law banning same-sex marriage.

Branstad says his chief of staff, his legal counsel and Lt. Gov. Kim Reynolds will participate in the interviews.

He has 30 days to appoint the new justices to the bench.
