Large fire displaces group of UI students

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- A fire late Saturday night at 421 South Dodge Street in Iowa City has displaced several University of Iowa students.

Lance Iburg, a tenant at the building, says he was on the second floor of the two story building when he heard two bangs, followed minutes later by the sound of the smoke alarm.

He says he went downstairs and saw heavy smoke pouring out of a downstairs unit.  Iburg  opened the door to the unit, didn't see anyone inside, and then called the fire department.

Iburg says several people were in the building at the time of the fire.  He says heavy smoke made it difficult to get out safely.

"We just got everyone, made sure everyone was okay, ran out.  It obviously was not easy to breathe or whatever.  It was a struggle but we made it," he said.

Multiple witnesses tell KWWL they believe everyone got out safely.

Several area fire departments and the Red Cross were on the scene to assist.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
