CORALVILLE (KWWL) - Hundreds of firefighters were in Coralville Saturday, hoping to douse the competition.

And it was all part of a long-withstanding tradition.

More than 180 fire departments from across the Midwest took part in the 36th annual Winter Water Fights at the Coralville Aquatic Center.

The goal is to spray a hanging barrel to the opposing end.   Firefighters say to win the tournament it takes good aim, and a little bit of luck.

They say the water fights are a chance to let loose and have a little fun.

"It's friendships that are renewed.  You see people that you talked to before that maybe you served on a team with before.   It's just a good time to come back and see people again," said Brian Flaherty, with the Coralville Fire Department.

The event is put on by the Coralville Firefighters Association.
