UIHC: Football players health records may have been illegally accessed

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- Officials at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics say an investigation is underway into possible illegal accessing of health records belonging to some of the 13 players hospitalized earlier this week.

Under the Health Information Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), patients medical records can only be accessed by employees with a legitimate reason to view those records.

UIHC says the performed a proactive review of those records which uncovered the possible violations.  UIHC routinely screens for possible privacy violations to protect the confidentiality of all patients, including those with high public profiles.

UIHC notified the players and their families on Friday.  The patients will receive letters that will detail the outcome of the investigation.  The investigation could take up to two weeks.

All faculty and staff at UIHC agree to follow the privacy rules on an annual basis and anyone caught violating the confidentiality of patients could be fired.
