Donations roll in for scholarships

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Donations are nearing $1 million that will go for scholarships in connection with Gov. Terry Branstad's inauguration.  The celebration planned for Branstad's return to office was projected to cost around $300,000. A spokesman says the estimate is holding true as bills are being totaled.  The rest of the money -- an estimated $700,000 -- will go for scholarships.  Gov. Chet Culver's 2007 inaugural cost about $700,000.  Gov. Tom Vilsack's 1999 inaugural cost more than $650,000.  Taxpayer money isn't used for inaugural celebrations. About $974,000 for Branstad's inauguration has been raised from donors so far.  The top donor to Branstad's inauguration is MidAmerican Energy Co. and its $10,000 gift.
