Tips to prevent frozen pipes

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The Waterloo Water Works is encouraging customers to take precautions to avoid frozen water pipes.

The recent sub-freezing temperatures have increase the freezing hazard.  Action on the part of residents now may avoid expensive thawing work or repairs.  Deep frost penetration increases the possibility of a frozen service line.  The line, which extends underground from the water main in the street into the home, is the property owner's responsibility.  In order to learn if the freezing danger is imminent, the water temperature should be checked frequently.

Simply hold a common outdoor thermometer under a running cold water faucet.  If the water temperature is below 40 degrees, experts suggest you run a stream of cold water inside the home at all times.  Inside water pipes, located adjacent to outside walls, should also be protected to prevent freezing.
