UI Contractor fined for safety violations in 2009

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- The company that employed a man killed in a construction accident Monday on the University of Iowa campus has been cited for safety violations in the past.

According to records obtained by The Associated Press, Iowa Bridge and Culvert, based in Washington, was cited in 2009 for violations that regulators say put employees in danger during another project near the University of Iowa campus.

According to the reports, the company allowed working conditions that exposed workers to the possibility of falling from a barge or being crushed by a crane.

Iowa Bridge and Culvert was fined for nine serious violations in March 2009.  They paid $5,400 in fines and agreed to correct the violations under a settlement agreement.

Kevin Hammons, 52, died Monday after a beam fell on him while working in a hole near the art building on Riverside Drive.
