UPDATE: All Blue Man Group shows cancelled due to burst pipe

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- A metal frame used to support stage curtains at Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the UNI campus malfunctioned causing a four-inch pipe to burst Tuesday morning.

GBPAC announced Tuesday afternoon that all three of the Blue Man Group performances had to be cancelled because of damage to the stage and equipment.

The sound of wet, squeaky shoes filled the hallways of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center Tuesday morning.

"While we were moving, one of the pipes we hang lights on were over weighted and got away from us. It hit a sprinkler pipe and the sprinkler pipe broke," said Steve Carignan, GBPAC Executive Director.

The sprinklers drenched both the center's equipment and equipment brought by the Blue Man Group.

More than 75 people helped move in equipment for the performances and more came in to help dry equipment off when they heard the news.

Cancelling a show is never easy especially when it is sold out. Out of the 11 years of the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center being in Cedar Falls they have only cancelled three shows.

"Twice for weather and once for an indoor downpour," Carignan said.

About 1,600 tickets were sold for Tuesday night's performance.

"It is heartbreaking because it was sold out. So what we are trying to do is work with the agent to try to reschedule because we never like to do this," Carignan said.

The Gallagher-Bluedorn is working with Blue Man Group management to reschedule the shows.

GBPAC says it is very important to hang on to tickets for the cancelled shows. Once those dates are announced, anyone who is unable to attend will receive a full refund.
