Hazleton considers ban on guns in city buildings

HAZLETON (KWWL) -- A new ordinance being considered in Hazleton would ban people from bringing guns into city buildings.

This is a topic coming up in conversation in many cities with Iowa's new gun permit law taking effect.

The Hazleton ban has already passed a first reading.  The mayor says he thinks it's unnecessary for people to carry weapons in city buildings.  He also says it is out of concern for the safety of city staff.

"I would like to see it where weapons were banned in town except for law enforcement officials, I really would in cities. I don't think there's any place for people to be running around with weapons in town," Mayor Wayne Holliday said.

The next vote on the gun ban ordinance is February 16th.
