Kids who sleep in on weekends may be skinnier, researchers say

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS (KWWL) -- Kids who are able to catch up on much-needed rest on the weekends may be able to stay at a healthy weight.

University of Chicago researchers monitored the sleep patterns of more than 300 children, and nearly all of them averaged 8 hours of sleep a night, much lower than the recommended 11 hours.

But kids who were able to make up for their sleep deficits on the weekends were less likely to be obese.

Overweight children also tended to have more irregular sleep patterns and more metabolic risks.
