UI president calls education cuts "very painful"

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- University of Iowa President Sally Mason says a proposal to cut funding for higher education and capping next year's tuition increase below 1 percent would be "very painful."

The Iowa House made that proposal last week, and Mason says it would jeopardize the school's efforts improve student retention. If it happens, she says it would be like "...putting a blindfold on me and tying my hands behind my back."

The plan would cut $25 million from the Board of Regents budget over a year and a half. It would also limit tuition and fee increases to no higher than the previous year's Higher Education Price Index.
