Roux Orleans changes name and menu

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- There's another new business coming to Waterloo, but it comes as another business goes away.

Roux Orleans and the Bourre Lounge opened in the Black's Building in downtown Waterloo in fall 2009. Owner Darin Beck says he is changing his Black's Building operations by converting Roux Orleans into the new Black's 501 Steakhouse and Piano Bar.

Beck says the changes are because of a weak economy, the sheer size of the property, and people's misconceptions about downtown Waterloo.

"People say that there isn't enough parking in downtown Waterloo and that it's not safe in downtown Waterloo or that it's not clean in downtown Waterloo and nothing could be further from the truth in all three cases," said Beck.

The Screaming Eagle has become a popular bar and grill in downtown. Owner Ivan Wieland agrees there are misconceptions, but he says the community must overcome them to make the downtown and all businesses successful.

"People adapt and work to find their niche in the area," said Wieland.

The new Black's 501 Steakhouse and Piano Bar will come with a change of menu and style.

"We'll be doing this at a very competitive price point. We're going to give a tremendous value to the guests who brave the conditions and come downtown. We're going to make it worth while," said Beck.

Beck also says there will be very little renovation. They will be building a stage for the dueling pianos, but the rest of the changes will be signage around the building.

March 1 will be the final switch from Roux Orleans to Black's 501 Steakhouse. The first dueling pianos show will be Friday March 4th.
