Mammograms and heart risk for kidney disease patients

Posted:

ATLANTA (KWWL) -- A new study finds mammograms may help assess heart risk in women with advanced kidney disease.

Researchers at Emory University found 63% of women with end-stage kidney disease had mammograms showing calcium deposits in the breast arteries.  These calcifications were only present in 17% of women without kidney disease.

Calcium deposits in the arteries may contribute to the higher death rates from heart disease among patients with renal disease, but they can be difficult to detect.

Researchers say mammograms could be a useful way to discover and track the progression of arterial calcifications in kidney patients to lower their risk of cardiovascular disease.
