Surgeons contemplate suicide more than general population

Posted:

A new study finds surgeons contemplate suicide more often than the general population, but are less likely to seek help.

In an anonymous survey of 8,000 surgeons, about 6% reported recent suicidal thoughts, which is twice the rate of those in other professions.

However, only about one quarter of those surgeons sought professional help for their problems, mostly because they feared losing their jobs.

The survey suggests job burnout, depression and medical errors weigh most heavily on the mental health of surgeons.

In fact, the rate of suicidal thoughts was 16% among those who'd made a major medical error.

Surgeons who worked fewer than 40 hours a week were much less likely to contemplate suicide.
