Golden Globe winners could help Iowa theaters

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Sunday marked the start of awards season for film makers. The 68th Annual Golden Globes giving movie buffs across the country a look at some of the best films of 2010. But did you know that winners can effect what movies are shown here in Eastern Iowa?

The upstairs level of Mindframe Theaters is always buzzing. They have seven films they are currently screening.

"We are a part of the community and are trying to offer something a little bit different," Co-owner Grand Grudzina said.

Mindframe shows plenty of mainstream films, but they specialize in independent, foreign and documentary films. Many of which were nominated for awards in Sunday's Golden Globes.

Take the best picture drama category: Black Swan, The Fighter, Inception, The King's Speech and The Social Network. Some of those films have played in Eastern Iowa but some haven't hit our market. Owners here say the winners at the Golden Globes could change that.

"The choices they make are very important in how they effect the popularity of films and then the publicity thetas followed up. If something becomes really popular then the company we distributing it has the opportunity then to broaden it's release then we have a really good chance of getting it in very quickly," Grudzina said.

Or the flip side of that, if a film starts to win, it could be more difficult to get in a small, independent, Iowa theaters.

"Sometimes of course it takes us a little while because those films go to a larger market first," Grudzina said.

Still Sunday night is important to theater owners at Mindframe. It could mean big things coming to the big screen.

"With a couple of key wins at a really good awards ceremony like this then I think that will be the nudge to hopefully get the film distributors to get more copies and release that more to smaller market areas," Grudzina said.

Mindframe owners say believe it or not, attendance can help They say the more showings they have, the more regular attendance. The more likely they are to get some of Sunday's winning films.

They says some distributors even choose cities like Dubuque to run their films because it's a unique market.
