Panthers avenge loss to Salukis 72-52

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)-  There wouldn't be any late-game heroics this time around.

The Panthers made sure of it early on.

Northern Iowa opened up a 16-6 lead, and never looked back, beating Southern Illinois 72-52 Saturday night at the McCleod Center, and erasing the memory from their heartbreaking defeat on New Year's Day in Carbondale.

Kwadzo Ahelegbe helped the Panthers widen the margin early, pouring in a game-high 21 points, including hitting the final shot before the halftime buzzer to put UNI up 33-18.

The Panthers also got some scoring from a less conventional source.  Lucas O'Rear scored a career high 18 points and posted a double-double.

UNI shot better than 58 percent from the field and outscored the Salukis 24-8 in the paint.

Northern Iowa will travel to Wichita, Kansas on Wednesday to take on the Wichita State Shockers.
