Army Reserve Unit leaves for Afghanistan

DECORAH (KWWL) -- About 160 U.S. Army Reserve soldiers from the 322nd Engineer Company will leave for final training this week. After two months of training they will then be deployed to Afghanistan.

The year-long deployment will be the unit's second tour.

The engineers will conduct general construction operations in southern Afghanistan including carpentry, electrical and plumbing work.

Before they left they stood in formation at the Center for Faith and Life at Luther College. Family and friends packed the auditorium to say farewell.

The 160 soldier company includes 70 members who train one weekend a month in Decorah and 90 other soldiers who were assigned to the 322nd because the company was down about 50 percent in personnel and those members are from all over the country.

The unit will leave town on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. by bus. Color guards from the American Legion and VFW Posts from Decorah and the surrounding area plan to escort the unit out of town. They are also inviting the community to line Water Street from Kephart's Music Center to the Museum to say goodbye as the buses pass through town.
