Update: United Healthcare closing Waterloo office

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- An eastern Iowa business announced to it's employees Thursday that it will be shutting it's doors in the spring. Company officials with United Healthcare say they are closing their Waterloo office and merging it with offices in Louisville, Kentucky and Duluth, Minnesota.

Employees say the news of layoffs is disappointing and with the economy back in upward swing, they hoped the layoffs could be avoided. On Thursday, however, they got the news that this office will be closed. Employees say around 50 people will be out of work.

Officials with the company held a meeting Thursday and it was announced they will be phasing people out in march and then more in may. A spokesperson for the company says they continually evaluate the company's organizational structure to make sure it is serving its customers' needs while operating efficiently and effectively.

That is why the company has decided to merge its offices around the country. Company officials released a statement.

"We are providing all affected employees with outplacement assistance, and these employees also have the opportunity to apply for other job openings throughout UnitedHealth Group. This will not impact or disrupt the service we provide to our customers in any way," said company spokesperson, Greg Thompson.

In 2009, UnitedHealth Group employed more than 80,000 people across the country. Through its family of subsidiaries and divisions, UnitedHealth group serves approximately 70 million people nationwide.
