Private pilots may have to use seat belts, air bags

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Private pilots may be flying planes with more safety features.

The National Transportation Safety Board is considering requiring more general aviation aircraft to be equipped with air bags and shoulder-lap seat belts.

Many new "G-A" planes sold today have the bags and belts, but that's only about 7,000 out of more than 200,000 registered in the U.S.

January 9, 2011, well-known Waterloo urologist Dr. Michael Welton and friend Roswitha Marold died in a plane crash in southern Colorado.
