CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- An Independence woman has been arrested in connection with a burglary in which Christmas presents were stolen from fire victims.

Police say Kayla Shaw, 18, of Independence, was one of two women police say acted as good Samaritans to Matthew Brownfield and his family after a fire broke out at their home at 1558 Bever Avenue SE in the early morning hours of December 11, 2010.

Police say Shaw and Shellie Everts, 30, of Cedar Rapids, comforted the family immediately after the fire but then returned once the Brownfield family was at a hotel and stole electronics and Christmas presents valued at nearly $3,000.

Shaw was charged on Tuesday with Third Degree Burglary.

Everts was arrested on December 15, 2010 and charged with Third Degree Burglary.

They both face up to five years in prison and/or a $1,000 fine.

Police say only a portion of the stolen property has been recovered.
