Eastern Iowa drivers brace for 3 bucks a gallon

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL)-- Drivers may be bracing for more pain at the pump in 2011 as gas prices continue to climb. In southeast Cedar Rapids Monday, prices dangled around the three dollar mark.  The price came in at $2.99 for a gallon of unleaded plus.

Debra Chambers fills up at least once a week to drive herself to two jobs and her kids to school in Cedar Rapids.   The high gas prices have forced her to scale back her grocery budget to cover transportation costs.   Chambers says,  "Oh wow. I wish we had the dollar back. A dollar a gallon is what I used to pay years ago. This is getting really ridiculous. A lot of people can't afford it and it is hard."

KWWL checked the price at the pump in Iowa City Monday morning which was at $3.00 for a gallon of unleaded plus.  That is nearly 20-cents higher than a month ago and 50-cents higher than a year ago according to the US Energy Information Agency.   Nationally, the average price of gas is $3.07.

Waterloo drivers are feeling the same pinch as those in Cedar Rapids.  Most places we checked were at $2.99 a gallon for unleaded plus.
