Guttenberg Municipal Hospital celebrates new facility

GUTTENBERG (KWWL) -- The Guttenberg Municipal Hospital first opened January 6, 1961.  Now, in 2011, the hospital is celebrating the completion of a new building project.  The new facility is a $12.3 million project.  It's an addition to another building, which was built in 1995.

The new facility is located at the same location as the original hospital: 200 Main St. in Guttenberg.  Patients will move into the new hospital January 19th.  The old hospital will be demolished later to make room for parking.

Friday, the hospital honored members of the community that helped donate money to furnish the facility.    More than one million dollars was raised locally to help cover costs not paid for by other sources.

The Guttenberg Municipal Hospital provides medical service to nearly 20,000 people in northeast Iowa.

In the past 50 years, hospital officials say they've done more than 14,000 surgeries, delivered 3,238 babies, provided outpatient therapy more than a million times, and admitted 34,500 patients.  1,506 patients took their final breaths at the Guttenberg Municipal Hospital during the first 50 years.
