Study finds link between autism and close pregnancies

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL)--While the overall risk of having a child with autism is very low, a new study of over 600,000 children finds an increased risk in closely-spaced pregnancies.

Using California birth records, researchers found babies conceived within a year of their older sibling's birth were three times more likely to be diagnosed with autism.

The risk decreased the farther apart pregnancies were spaced.

Experts aren't sure why, but speculate women who conceive again quickly may have depleted nutrients.
