Bringing recycling to Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Like many Cedar Falls residents, Brian Hoyer is no stranger to sorting through recycling.

"I've lived here my whole life, I grew up doing recycling on Saturday mornings with my dad," he said.

Hoyer never thought those Saturday mornings would turn into five days a week, every week. But after hearing people ask, why doesn't someone start a curbside recycling business, he got inspired to go green.

"I figured, why am I not doing this? So that's how I started out."

Hoyer started Recycle Rite, and service begins on Monday morning. For $20 a month, Hoyer will stop by once a week -- on your regular garbage day -- and pick up all of your recycling right at the curb.

"The city comes by and gets the garbage, we come by and get your recycling, and you take them both back at the same time. It's pretty much a very simple concept," he explained.

His plan isn't revolutionary, but it is a major change for Cedar Falls.

"Going from thinking about it to doing it, there's been a lot of hurdles to come over. The bins for one thing," Hoyer noted.

Before Hoyer could sell a single bin, he had to talk the plan over with city leaders.

"They had a couple issues, to make sure our garbage cans are far enough away on collection day so the city trucks can get to it without knocking over anything."

Which is part of the reason Hoyer finally decided to use one container for everything.

"This is just more stream-lined, and single-stream recycling is the wave of the future."

Yes, it mean's he'll have to get his hands dirty, but he believes hard work now may pay off down the road.

"I would really like to see this go into a full-time job where I could have my own business," Hoyer added.
