Dubuquer receives First Citizen Award

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- The Dubuque Telegraph Herald presented one civic volunteer with the First Citizen Award.

A humble and thankful Jeanne Powers Quann received the newspaper's 41st annual award at a standing-room-only reception Thursday night.

She is a Dubuque native and a longtime volunteer in the community.

At the ceremony, she gave thanks to her family, friends and the people of Dubuque for their love and support.

After the ceremony, she described what it was like to get the news that she'd won.

"My reaction was, I started to cry and I couldn't believe it," she said. "As I was getting ready to come down here, I thought, 'This can't be me. I know me, and this can't be me.'"

Every year, Dubuque's Telegraph Herald newspaper invites readers to nominate people they think should win, and a committee from the newspaper picks the recipient.

The award is meant honor local citizens in the tri-states area who contribute greatly to their community.
