Covenant's breast center receives national accreditation

Posted:

WATERLOO (KWWL)--Covenant Hospital's Comprehensive Breast Center in Waterloo has been granted full accreditation, making it just one of about 200 nationwide and only the fourth in Iowa to receive the designation.  The other accredited breast centers are in Iowa City, Davenport and Council Bluffs.

Getting a breast cancer diagnosis can be scary for anyone.  And often, patients are filled with questions about how their cancer will be treated.  Care that doctors at Covenant's Breast Center say will only be improved now that it's received national accreditation.

"One of the things that, when they come to an accredited breast center, they can be assured of is it takes out the guess work:  Are they going to do what's supposed to be done?  What's proven to be the best care?  It kind of takes that out.  So there's some things then they can be certain of even though some parts of their life are totally out of control," said Dr. Neil McMahon with Wheaton-Franciscan Healthcare.

That team approach to healthcare will only be aided by Covenant's new breast care navigator, a staff person who helps patients transition through different phases of their treatment.  In order to receive accreditation, the hospital had to undergo a rigorous evaluation process measuring 27 standards of cancer care ranging from radiology to surgery.

"It was important to us because we have always been committed to the quality of care we give our patients.  But this will kind of help hold us accountable to that commitment, because we are to attain these same 27 standards annually through the American College of Surgeons," said Lisa Walker with Covenant's Comprehensive Breast Center.

And by keeping those high standards, Covenant believes breast cancer patients will be able to receive the best possible outcome for the treatment of their disease.

And on the seventh of the month, KWWL wants to remind you to find a buddy in the fight against breast cancer.  Remind each other to keep up-to-date on self exams and yearly mammograms.  Early detection is key to a quick recovery.
