National Duals go on without 2010 Champion Hawkeyes

Posted:

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL)--This weekend wrestling nation comes to the Cedar Valley, but the three time defending NCAA champions won't be here.

The Iowa Hawkeyes are skipping the duals this year, instead wrestling Friday night against a 1 and 6 Southern Illinois at Edwardsville team before taking eight days off.

The Hawkeyes' absence has created a bit of controversy in the college wrestling world. Earlier, Hawkeye Head Coach Tom Brands said the decision to skip the duals was based on the youth of his team and readiness for an event that features 16 of the top 25 programs in the country.

Many speculate Brands might be trying to protect the Hawkeyes' school record of 68 straight dual victories, but Iowa faces second ranked Oklahoma state in Stillwater in less than two weeks.
