Remembering a Loras College graduate killed in a crash

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Members of the Loras College community are mourning the death of a recent graduate.

23-year-old Christian Sogaard was driving along Highway 20 near Farley Tuesday night. The Dubuque County Sheriff's Department says his vehicle left the road, crashing into a bridge support pillar.  Sogaard died from injuries.

Having graduated in December with a degree in philosophy, Sogaard is fresh in the Loras College community's mind.

Friends say they remember him as a spirited and selfless leader active in Loras activities and one who will be missed.

"This rocks a lot of people's world," Dean of Campus Spiritual Life Father William Joensen said.

People gathered Wednesday afternoon at Christ the King chapel on campus to pray for Sogaard and his family.

With a turnout of about 150 people during the school's smaller January term, Joensen said, "it shows what this man meant to people and how grievously his death touches us in the cold January."

Joensen taught Sogaard in a number of classes.

"He could be quiet and introspective and then there'd be this great display of energy and passion, too," Joensen said.

Online, friends are leaving well-wishes on his Facebook wall, saying, "Rest in peace," "I still had much to learn from you" and quoting Bible verses.

In his time at Loras College, Sogaard was a musician and played for the Loras soccer team, among other campus involvement.

"You can't identify everything he was about. I don't think any one person.  They saw a certain glimpse, a certain facet of Christian, and then he was on to something else," Joensen said. "I don't know exactly his concrete plans, but I know he had aspirations to the peace corps and other places."

Now, those posting on Sogaard's wall say they know he's in a better place.

Sogaard last updated his Facebook status on December 31, commenting on the new year ahead.

The Dubuque County Sheriff's Department is still investigating the fatal crash.
