New library property now belongs to Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- The City of Cedar Rapids now owns the property that will be home to the new library.

The city officially bought the property at 421 4th Avenue SE from TrueNorth on Dec. 29, for $7.5 million.  TrueNorth is expected to move in October and will lease the land from the city for $10,000 per month until then.

The original library location, at 500 East 1st Street, was destroyed by the floods of 2008.  The main branch is currently located at Westdale Mall on the first level.

When construction begins on the new library, the current TrueNorth building will be demolished.  The new library is expected to open in the summer of 2013.

TrueNorth purchased the former library site from the city for $200,000 and will relocate there.
