Student essays needed for MLK Statewide contest

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Sharpen your pencils, or get ready to type, the 2nd Annual Statewide MLK Essay Contest is accepting submissions.

Students in grades second through twelfth are invited to submit essays about civil rights and volunteerism.  The deadline is January 12th.

Divided into three subgroups based on year in school, students will address what they feel it means to make a difference, describe who their role models are and how those role models inspired them to reach out to others, or write a modern day speech from the perspective of a nonviolent civil rights movement leader.

Six winners, three from each grade category, will be honored at the State of Iowa Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration held at the State Historical Building in Des Moines on Monday, January 17, 2011.

Please visit the Iowa Civil Rights Commission's website for contest rules and forms.
